The University of Aberdeen

The University of Aberdeen is one of the oldest in the UK, established in 1495. I was an Honorary Research fellow and later Honorary Professor at Aberdeen while Research Director of the Arkleton Trust (Research) Ltd.  The Trust had a long history of collaboration with Aberdeen, and especially with Professor Mark Shucksmith.  In 1995, I was offered the Chair of Human Geography at the University, and joined the Trust’s research activities with those of Mark Shucksmith to create the new Institute for Rural Development Research, which had a very successful track record in EU funded comparative research projects for almost a decade.  The Institute closed in 2005 after I became Emeritus Professor on retirement and Mark moved to a Chair at Newcastle University.
