Preparing for the Second Leg to Scotland

by on 2018/06/13

It is now two and a bit days until we must leave Skive, and go on the second leg of our voyage by sail from Sweden to Brazil and back. This leg takes us north to the west of Norway, and then west from Bergen to Sumburgh in the (at one time Nordic) Shetland Islands of Scotland. After some days there, we head south again to Fair Isle, and then the (also formerly Nordic) Orkney Islands before continuing to Inverness. We spend some days there with friends and fanily before continuing south west-wards to the West of Scotland, where we will sail for some time with friends and family.

This week was heralded by the arrival of Fist Mate, Lisbeth Refsgaard, my bonus daughter. On Monday, everything started with the re-launch of Svalen into her element (see video), after a week of cleaning, polishing and antifouling, not to mention checking of sea-cocks and other external things that needed to be checked before the long voyage. Since then Lisbetb and I have been cleaning and preparing the non-wetted surfaces, and getting help with checking all the other things like hydraulics, engines, refrigeration,, small deck repairs, etc from the team at Værftet, including Martin, Nils, Søren. We are also still waiting for a NMEA convertor for the GPS-Radio connections, and until that arrives, Lasse and Ole cannot get on with the finishing of the radio work. It is all getting a bit last minute, but everyone is doing their best. At the moment, we still plan to leave Skive on Saturday morning at 0830, and the winds should be favourable for a non-stop sail out to the North Sea (or Denmark´s West Sea) at Thyboron , at least until Monday, ac cording to the present forecasts.
